Foxtrot

This video shows the highest level of foxtrot. The common social dance level is much easier to learn and to have fun with, though this demonstrates the kind of moves students can acquire with a lot of practice with foxtrot.

One of the more versatile of the classic ballroom dances, Foxtrot continues to be a favorite partner dance with many different levels - from easily acquired basic steps to get couples on the dance floor to much more intricate higher-level steps that will keep students coming back to learn.

Foxtrot has its roots back in Vaudeville, with the same ragtime beginnings as some of the early swing dances. However, instead of keeping the bouncing style, it was smoothed out into the elegant, gliding dance we know today. This dance is often preferred by those who enjoy the classic ballroom style of the iconic waltz, while still being able to dance to more songs using the more common 4/4 time signature, as opposed to the 3/4 time necessary for waltz.

You may see references to multiple kinds of waltz online (“American” or “Smooth” as opposed to “International” or “Standard”). These distinctions really only matter for the competitive ballroom dance circles, though our instructors have knowledge of both styles. In social dance, these styles are usually combined or used interchangeably in the USA, so beginner students need not worry about trying to learn two different styles or missing out on styles.
